Recently I dusted off my journals and as I read the pages of my past I was reconnected to the woman I was. I was lost, stuck and I felt alone,

but most of all, I couldn’t shake this feeling, this knowing that I was meant to be doing something else. To be living a different life. I didn’t know how, I didn’t know what, I didn’t know where my new path would lead, all I knew was something needed to change.

I didn’t have clarity as to my ideal job. Or where I wanted to live. Or even the woman I wanted to be. But I knew my current job was unfulfilling. I knew my current apartment wasn’t home. I knew I wasn’t being the woman I wanted to be.

I wasn’t clear on what I wanted, but I was clear as day as to what I didn’t want.

Now, looking back, I see that my power lied in the not knowing, in what I didn’t want.

Not knowing holds as much power as clarity. Listen to it.

You already have all the tools within you to find clarity, so let’s dive into the how.

#1 Start with a list:

Start with one life area (career, health, romance, family & friends, home, money or personal growth) and make a list of all the things that are not working in that one area.  All the things you dislike and make you unhappy. Tap into your feelings and be brutally honest here.

I’m going to use my old job as an example. My job was unfulfilling. I felt trapped working in an office from 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday thru Friday. I felt like I was watching life pass me by.  I disliked being told to dress a certain way and spend money on clothes I disliked, clothes that didn’t express who I was.

#2 Reverse it:

Now put on your detective hat and review your list. What is the opposite of the items you noted? How can you reverse it? How can you turn it around? (Hint: this will start giving you clues as to what you actually want).

Continuing to use me as an example: Fulfilling is the opposite of unfulfilled. Free is the opposite of trapped. A flexible schedule is the opposite of 8:30am to 5:00pm. Freedom to dress anyway I want is the opposite of business attire.

#3 Put it all together:

Review the reverse and create one sentence that expresses what you want. Start the sentence with “I desire…”

“I desire a fulfilling career that supports freedom, a flexible schedule and authentic style”.

Now you have a clear statement of what you want. Use this statement to guide you when making decisions or researching a new career (home, health, money, etc. – depending on the life category you choose).

Everything you need to find clarity is within you. Slow down. LISTEN. Trust the whisper.
